about
Following their critically acclaimed debut EP ‘You’re Welcome’, Modern Guilt have kicked off 2022 in style by announcing the release of brand new single ‘Joy Control’.
Hailed by tastemakers including John Kennedy (Radio X), praised by This Feeling as one of the ‘Best New Bands’, and championed by the likes of Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), Shell Zenner (BBC Radio / Amazing Radio) and Rowena Alice (BBC Radio / Boogaloo Radio / Islington Radio), Modern Guilt “are re-igniting and modernising their era and genre influences in a strong flame of colour” (Listen To Discover).
‘Joy Control’ is the band’s first release following last year’s ‘You’re Welcome’ EP. Produced by long-term collaborator Mikey Buckley, the new single sits somewhere between the sounds of Motown and the New Wave scene of 1970’s New York City. While lyrically it depicts the frustrations of watching an individual, for a multitude of reasons, choose not to become someone you thought they could be.

‘Best New Bands’ - This Feeling & Amazon Music
“Modern Guilt are knocking it out of the park. Their sound already has a level of maturity that makes it both distinctive and confident in it’s ambition” - Chalkpit Records
“They’re fun, gritty, and daringly infectious. We’ll be watching this band with great interest, they’re for sure going places” - Clunk Magazine

lyrics
You could have been quite something
Nothing that they’d ever seen
Breaking hearts like bones in the summer
And breaking hearts through the tv screens
But I think I know you
Seen your type before
You wanna kiss the neck of the ghost that you wear and hit the floor
And i know how you’ve been feeling
You spelt it out in the snow
With the tip of a lit cigarette you said its time to leave you’ve got no place to go
You keep me hanging on
Oh on the telephone
I feel you’re getting cold
Oh well I’m here for a little joy control
You could have stolen all the world
Right out from under their throats
Why’d you turn you’re back on it all and hit the road
You don’t want to stop me from feeling
Just want to make me cry
Oh it really works for you baby, I don’t know if it’s been like that a while
You keep me hanging on
Oh on the telephone
I can’t take much more
Oh well I’m here for
Oh well I’m here for
Oh well I’m here for joy control
You keep me hanging on
Oh on the telephone
I can’t take much more
Oh well I’m here for a little joy control
