about
Modern Guilt get reflective with new single ‘Talking To Myself’ released digitally on Thursday 30 November 2023.
Championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq (BBC 6Music), John Kennedy (Radio X) and Jess Iszatt (BBC Radio 1 / Introducing), the London based outfit “are re-igniting and modernising their era and genre influences in a strong flame of colour” (Listen To Discover).
As the title suggests, ‘Talking To Myself’ is about the way we talk to ourselves - the internal narrative or narrator. Frontman Jaz adds “the idea behind the song is about acknowledging how savage that dialogue is. It’s a bit of a reflection and a retaliation, it shouldn’t be like this but it is, and whether or not to buy what it’s selling me”.
He continues, “so many people I know have the same situation where the way they perceive themselves is so vastly different to how they are perceived and I believe it’s important that people know that they’re not alone in having this punitive jury sitting in on everything we are and everything we do”.
Produced by long term collaborator Mikey Buckley, the track reflects its narrative in being both direct and versatile, softening out its own jagged edges and bringing bite to the fuller arrangement.
The new single will be accompanied by a short film directed by acclaimed film maker Ross Scott in the lead up to the band’s second EP due to be released in February 2024.

lyrics
Got my future on an eight track telling me to get back all that I gave away
You said it’s easy the way you try to read me they’re sharp all the things that you say
You gotta praise me you should know
You gotta raise me as your own
I wanna buy you a new heart while you cut your teeth at the bar
I know you’re mean
Heavy like the sea
Tell me what you want before you take it all away
Help me understand why I wait for your words while I pray
Turn off the taps there’s two black Cadillacs waiting out back for me
Kicking up the dust I don’t know why I trust the knives that you hide in your sleeves
I know that you’re me
Heavy like the sea
Old songs on the radio telling me it won’t go back where it was before
I know that you’re me
Cold, and heavy like the sea
All of a sudden wanna be someone else just for the day
Heard what you told, bought what you sold
Hope it ain’t true what you say
Beg for night, howl I’m tired guess I’m blind to see
Help me now gotta figure out why you want another piece of me
